Project: Digital practice in preschools
Many of our preschools are we participating in this project. Norlandia uses digital tools together with children to create new learning, new understanding, new creativity and new forms of play. We use iPad Mini which are easy for kids to handle.
Children are different, they have different interests, skills and abilities. As preschool employees, we shall engage in play. We shall observe both play, interaction and relationships. We will challenge the children, support them, inspire them, lift them, watch them and guide them. Some children are good at skiing, drawing, climbing, origami or playing football. Some prefer to just work with beads, then we need to motivate, inspire and contribute to diversity. Then there are some children who shine by mastering certain games, then they can teach it to others and be the expert in that situation. We should embrace all, everyone should get shine, everyone should be seen. Our preschool staff use different tools and processes to achieve this goal.
When we use digital tools with children in preschool, we as adults need certain skills so we can use these resources with the children. ICT in preschool has value in an educational perspective. It is important to focus on educational and appropriate processes. All adults need not be equally good, but all need some knowledge of educational use.
We will give children the knowledge, attitudes and skills related to digital tools in creativity, play and learning, as part of the preschool mandate for social cohesion. Using digital tools will especially strengthen the educational work within these areas:
• Communication, language and text
• Number, space and form
• Art, culture and creativity
Preschool should contribute to increased understanding of the creative use of digital tools. Kids can also experience creative and social processes using an iPad. In this project we are aware of social processes around games, sharing, learning and social cohesion. The project contributes to social cohesion in several ways. For those who do not have access at home, preschools contribute to common reference. We know that children play out impressions from various media, thus can references from games have significance in play. Preschools can contribute to increased common reference in the group of children. For those who play alone at home, preschools provide an experience of digital games in a social context. Children learn rules and good habits, and they experience that iPad and other equipment are also tools to create with.
